Amy's Story Life in Music Why Epilepsy? Amy's Story

"Music is one of the most important things in my life. It helps me with everything. It makes me feel understood. It lets me cry, be angry, feel happy – everything. I truly believe that a creative outlet is the best therapy, which is one of the reasons why I always encourage my fans to put their feelings into something constructive. When you create something, like music, it’s genuine; it’s real. And after you’ve created something so real you can walk away from any situation feeling good."

Music and Epilepsy

Music has a fascinating relationship with epilepsy. In addition to it being a therapeutic release for some, it has also been studied for its theorized ability to decrease seizure activity. Though none of these studies have produced definitive results, it is nonetheless an intriguing prospect. In April 2002, the medical journal Epilepsy & Behavior reported a decrease in seizure activity when patients listened to Mozart. Music from other notable composers, such as Joseph Haydn and Franz Liszt, were also introduced in the study. But Mozart continued to score significantly higher than the selections from six other composers in one of the important characteristics of this music -- the repetition of the melody.
